1. The Bird of Paradise
The birds of Paradise can only be found in New Guinea. The brilliant colors and the long ornamental feathers of these birds are worldwide known. They were excessively hunted down for their plumes, and this had great effects on their breeding behavior.
2. The keel-billed toucan
This strange looking fellow is considered by many one of the most beautiful birds in the world. This is most probably because of its enormous, colorful bill. It also owns a pair of blue feet, some red feather tips and a yellow chest that complete the color scheme of the keel-billed toucan.
3. The peacock
The peowolf lives in South Asia. It is the national bird of India and has an important role in the local traditions. The peacock (male Indian peawolf) is worldwide known for its beautiful tail (train) which evolved to its actual shape and color scheme as part of the breeding process.
4. The rainbow lorikeet
This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful birds in the world. Some name it THE most beautiful. The rainbow lorikeet deserve its name: the colors of the rainbow are all present in the plumage of this Australian bird. Mother Nature is an extremely skillful painter and we cannot but enjoy its works of art!
5. The snowy owl
The snowy owl may be found in the northern circumpolar region. While the male is completely white, the female of the species have dark scalloping. It is a simply elegant bird and its majestic beauty often leaves her watchers astonished. The picture speaks for itself…
6. The flamingo
The flamingo is a very popular bird. We all heard of it, saw it (the majority of us in pictures only though) and we all appreciate its special beauty. There are 6 flamingo species, 4 of them located in the Americas (Chile, Peru, Argentina and Bolivia), one in Africa and the other both in Africa and Europe. Flamingos are famous for their standing on one foot while the other is tucked beneath the body. Some argue that this behavior marks a special ability, that of sleeping with half of the body, while the other remains awake. This bird is also famous for its unusual pink color, which is due to aqueous bacteria and beta carotene obtained from their food supply. A well fed bird will have a bright pink tone, while an always hungry one will be pale and colorless.
7. Crowned crane
This magnificent bird may be found only in the remote areas of the African savannah. A tall bird (it reaches 1 meter), it is famous for its interesting breeding ritual, which includes jumping, dancing and bowing. Apart for this talent, the crowned crane is known for its beautiful crown of stiff golden feathers from which the bird got its name.
8. The violet-green swallow
The violet-green swallow has a very suggestive name. Though small, it is one of the most beautiful birds in the world because of its beautiful color patterns, of the sweet appearance. The violet green swallow lives only in America and it nests in cavities in a tree or rock crevice, sometimes forming small colonies.
9. The red-and-green macaw
This really colorful macaw is a close relative of the scarlet macaw. They are both very beautiful birds, and the most significant difference in their appearance is the different colors of the upper wing covert feathers (green at the red-and-green macaw and yellow at the scarlet macaw) and the little red lines around the eyes, on a white area. They are very popular pets, but their natural habitat is represented by the Amazonian jungle, where their number sadly started to decline.
10. The bald eagle
The bald eagle is not actually bald. Its name comes from an older significance of the term, that of ‘white headed’. The symbol and emblem of the USA, it was on the list of endangered species for many years. Recently, however the bald eagle population was stabilized and it increased gradually, so that from the year 2007, it was removed even from the list of threatened species, as it is now flourishing again. One of the most beautiful birds in the world, the bald eagle looks proud, graceful, distinguished…absolutely gorgeous!
