Medium sized dogs are tricky to choose. Whenever people talk about buying a dog they usually either go for very small or big breeds neglecting some of the best breeds out there. Yet even if they’re not as popular as pets, throughout the world these dogs have proven themselves serving as work, guide and therapy animals. Here are some of the best medium dog breeds. Not only are these medium sized dogs loveable but most are utility dogs, which means that they are interesting and quite smart.
10.English Bulldog
Nothing says character like the good ol’ English Bulldog. Perhaps the most recognisable out of all medium sized dogs the bulldog has a dark past. Several centuries ago the breed was first developed for bull-baiting, a bloody and dangerous sport. Today, the only sport the Bulldog enjoys is frisbee and even that sparingly. After all, the saying ‘stubborn as a bulldog’ holds a grain of truth.

The Basset hound is another medium dog that is full of character. With its floppy ears and perpetual pout the basset too is a quite well known medium sized dog. Even though people tend to think that Bassets are lazy they are quite energetic when they want to, which is why they have been serving as tracking dogs with law enforcement agencies for decades.

The Australian Cattle Dog was specifically bred to herd cattle and sheep in the harsh climate of Australia and is therefore one of the hardiest dogs out there. Though most people think Huskies are large dogs because of their job as sleigh dogs they are actually the epitome of medium sized dogs. Because they are bred as working dogs in cool climates Huskies will need a lot of grooming and a lot of exercise but the extra work is worth it for one of the craziest, happiest dogs in the world.

The strange and regal Chinese Shar-Pei was a favourite of Chinese emperors. And you can definitely see why. Majestic and dignified, the Shar-Pei is more lion than dog. And just like a lion it is a fierce animal, especially when it comes to protecting its owners, especially children. Shar-Pei might look funny but they are excellent guard dogs and companions.

Do you like the sea? Not as much as the Portuguese Water Dog. This dog might look like the average stray to you but it is Israel’s national dog breed and according to researchers it has been for over three thousand years. Yes, this humble but dignified dog’s ancestors might have walked and barked alongside somebody equally humble and dignified: Jesus Christ himself!

The Samoyed is one of the most beautiful dogs out there and one of the friendliest too. Yes this majestic dog with its long, beautiful coat is more than just a sight for sore eyes. The Samoyed loves interaction and particularly enjoys playing with children. Not only that but it is also an excellent watch dog. 2. Chow Chow
Chow Chows are not the sharpest tacks in the drawer and can be downright frighteningly protective of their masters but they are excellent medium sized dogs nonetheless. One of the oldest dog breeds, Chow Chow are truly aristocratic: they do not enjoy digging or chewing slippers and cannot be bothered to play fetch.
