We received a lot of emails from our dog lover readers saying that we should do an article on the cat’s canine nemesis. We’ve done our research and we discovered the most expensive dog breeds available at the moment. Who won the competition as the world’s most expensive pets? Cats or dogs? 1. German Shepherd
This popular dog breed is one of the most intelligent in the world. It was originally meant to be a guard dog that was supposed to take care of the flocks of sheep. The German shepherd makes for an ideal companion, loyal, lovable and very protective. A well trained German shepherd can cost a small fortune. You can get a very good German shepherd for $3000 and even $24,000.
2. English Bulldog
The English Bulldog stands as one of the most expensive dog breeds in the world. It has been around since the 19th century and it was used in England mostly for bull baiting. The English bulldogs are both courageous and very alert. They love to play, eat and sleep. This particular dog breed has become very popular in the U.S. Because they have a short muzzle, the English bulldog can develop breathing problems. This is one of the reasons why this dog costs between $2,500 and $9,000.
3. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
This expensive dog breed takes its name after King Charles II of England. It was considered a fashionable lap dog and has been a family companion since the 17th century. This spaniel breed is very friendly and very fond of its owners and they get along just as well in the country or the city. It also requires to be groomed regularly. The King Charles spaniel costs between $1,000 – $14,000.
4. Saluki
The saluki is known as the royal Egypt dog and it’s one of the oldest domesticated dog breeds in the world. It was used by Arab people to hunt down gazelles and brought to England to be used as a hunting dog in the 1800s. The saluki is a very graceful and enduring dog. It’s also one of the most expensive dog breeds in the world, their price being somewhere between $2,500 and $5,000.
5. Samoyed
This a special dog breed. The Samoyed was used for herding and pulling sleds and is now very appreciated by dog lovers for their glossy appearance. Another great thing about the Samoyed breed is that their mouth always seems to be smiling, which can bring a smile on our faces anytime. Because of this, people are willing to pay $4,000 – $11,000 for this beautiful dog.
6. Akita
Akita is known as the Great Japanese Dog and a symbol of great health. It was originally bred as a guarding dog, fighting and hunting and it’s still being used a police dog in Japan. The akita dog is a very loyal watchdog and they are appreciated for their lovable character. The akita can also be very aggressive towards strangers that threaten the well-being of its owners. This lovely dog costs $1,500 – $4,500.
7. Chow Chow
This dog breed is one of the oldest in the world dating back to 300 BC. They are thought to have come from China and were used for birding, hunting and guard dogs. The most recognizable thing about the Chow Chow breed is their blue-black tongue. This unique breed that looks a bit like a lion because of its fluffy fur costs $3,000 – $8,500.
8. Tibetan Mastiff
No one really knows the history of this mysterious dog breed. They make great guardians and loving family companions. In 2011 a Tibetan Mastiff was bought for the incredible sum of $1,5 million, making it one of the most expensive dog breeds in the world.
9. Rottweiler
This ferocious looking dog has an interesting piece of history: they are descendants of ancient Roman cattle dogs. Nowadays, the Rottweiler is used as military and police dogs because they are excellent guard dogs. They can also be great family dogs, despite popular beliefs about being a very aggressive dog breed. It all depends on how they are raised and brought up. A Rottweiler costs $2,000 – $8,000.
10. Egyptian Pharaoh Hound
This is another ancient dog breed dating back to 3000 B.C in Egypt. The Egyptian pharaoh hound is a very friendly, playful, and intelligent dog. They need lots of exercise because of their athletic bodies. This is one of the most expensive dog breeds, costing as much as $6000.
