Choosing the “Greatest love songs of all time” is most certainly not an easy task. With so many wonderful options out there, I had to rely on the message of the songs and on their popularity. These were, therefore, the two basic criteria upon which I built this list. Some of you may not agree with my options at all. That is only normal and I cannot wait to hear your own proposals! Here is, hence, my very own list of “ 10 greatest love songs of all time”. Enjoy!
1. Truly, madly, deeply – Savage Garden
No list would be complete without this song! The two Australian guys that created this unforgettable tune amazed us with their interpretation for the first time in 1996. Since then, many weddings and proms ended with this song and countless couples shared romantic moments while listening to it. Well, I certainly did not get bored of it and the lyrics still have an impact on me. This is why “Truly, Madly, Deeply” comes first on my list.
2. Love song – The Cure
What love song represents best its section than the “Love song” of The Cure? Even if you only consider the number of times that the word “love “ appears within the lyrics, you get a song that is completely, about this feeling. The entire melody is a love declaration and a really beautiful one too. Apparently, the song was inspired by the composer’s (Robert Smith) fiancé and was intended as a wedding gift. Little did he know that his declaration of love will become such a great success!
3. Lady in red – Chris de Burg
I simply cannot imagine how this one could ever miss from a list called “greatest love songs of all time”. In my opinion, this is one of the greatest songs-of any kind- ever. It is simply touching. “Sensitive”, “sweet”, “eternal”…there are not enough epitets to attribute to “Lady in Red”. Chris de Burgh created a masterpiece!
4. Can’t help falling in love – Elvis Presley
The voice of the king is really awesome for this extraordinary song. Even while I’m writing, I can hear in my head his special voice interpreting this tune…this is pretty amazing, especially considering that he died before I was even born! This love song is perfect for a romantic evening at home, don’t you agree?
5. I just called to say I love you –Stevie Wonder
When talking about popular love songs, “I just called to say I love you” is one of the first titles that come into my mind. If there is someone out there who does not know it, he or she is part of a rare species. Most of us probably know the lyrics by heart. It is a simple, yet beautiful song to be plaid when a romantic atmosphere needs to be created quickly…
6 Wonderful tonight – Eric Clapton
“Wonderful tonight” is one of the songs that will probably be murmured by our children and grand children as well. Eric Clapton wrote it especially for his sweetheart, Patty Boyd. As she confessed, it became a torture to hear it after their breaking up. Well, it is most certainly not a torture for the rest of us!
7. My heart will go on- Celine Dion
Some of the guys out there will disagree with me, but, like it or not, “My heart will go on” is one of the greatest love songs of all time, at least in my view. Even though it became somewhat commercial, especially because of the great success of “Titanic”, the message of the song, as well as the incomparable voice of Celine Dion are powerful and intoxicating.
8. You are the first, the last, my everything –Barry White
Ah, Barry White! A deep, manly voice and an emotional message are at the core of this great tune. Barry White’s love song was very successful at the time of its release and it remained a world’s favorite to this day. A great melody to listen to when you’re in love and happy about it, “You are the first, the last, my everything” is definitely forbidden to the ones that broke up recently.
9. I’ll never break your heart – The Backstreet Boys
This song is really beautiful and positive, thus making it a great wedding, first date, or first kiss song. Backstreet Boys tried to build a “nice guys” image of them since the beginning. It is not a surprise then that they will never break the hearts of their girlfriends! Really, we would never expect them to!
10. Grow old with you-Adam Sandler
I know for sure that many of you will go “hah” at seeing Adam Sandler’s song from “The Wedding Singer” on this list of the greatest love songs of all time. It is just that I could not help it… I really, really love this one. It is sweet, funny, but deep and it is definitely very romantic!
