As most of us already know a masquerade ball (also known as bal masqué) is an event where people wear costumes accompanied by fashionable masks. Masquerade balls marked the Carnival season back in the 15th century, involving Royal Entries, pageants, and the celebration of unifying two people into marriage, alongside with other medieval court life events. During the 16th century Italy hosted costumed public festivities where groups of dancers entertained the upper class. These events were most popular in Venice and have later been associated with the Venetian Carnival tradition. As the Venetian Republic fell (sometimes during the end of the 18th century) their popularity diminished until eventually disappearing completely. As for Europe, masquerade balls became famous in the 17th and 18th centuries. Fact is that some of these events ended with tragic results, such as the assassination Sweden’s Gustav the Third, an event which inspired Giuseppe Verdi to compose “A Masked Ball“. With this short history in mind, we’ve thought of offering you a list of masquerade prom masks, since this unique event is soon to kick-start.
