DPF or diesel particulate filter is a device designed to take out diesel particulate matter or soot that’s found on the exhaust gas of a diesel engine. These systems are installed on diesel vehicles that were built in the past five years and, most of the times, they remove more than 85% (in particular cases even 100%) of the soot. While some of these filters are designed to be used only once (replaced after one fully accumulated ash), others are designed to burn the accumulated particles off in a passive manner with the help of a catalyst or by active means – a fuel burner that heatwaves the filter to soot combustion temperature. The method is known as “filter regeneration”. Cleaning the DPF system is an absolute must, and must be done with great care so you avoid damaging the filter. Vehicles that are driven at low speeds in urban traffic are more likely to require DPF cleaning. If one ignores the warning light and waits too long, the damage to the DPF system can be irreversible. These filters have been in use since 1980 with non-road machines, and five years later in automobiles. The composition of the particles differ, depending on the engine type, age, and the emissions specification. As an example, two-stroke diesel engines produce more particulate/unit of power in comparison with four-stroke diesel engines, as they don’t completely burn the fuel-air mix. With that said, if you’re a diesel engine owner, here’s our list of DPF cleaning solutions. However, we advice not to do this on your own unless you really know what you’re doing, and even so, it’s better to go to authorized companies.
10. DPF Cleaner (100ml)
We start out the list with the JLM Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Cleaner Fluid. The liquid is poured into the fuel tank every service interval for an effective and deep cleaning power of the Diesel Particulate Filter. The product clears out and cleans blocked diesel filters at 1st stage warning, and ensures full diesel filter regeneration in painstaking drive cycles, such as the city driving. The JLM DPF Cleaner Fluid ensures long term durability of DPF systems, aids the passive regeneration across a wider temperature range, prevents run-away regeneration – thus avoiding damaging the filter, minimizes unplanned maintenance costs, and last but not least, saves valuable diagnosis and driving time.
9. Pat Fluid DPX 42/176 (Eoyls) 1 Litre
The second product is the JLM PAT fluid DPF cleaner. This can be added solely by a certified official mechanic into a special DPF reservoir that’s found underneath your car. The PAT fluid is a fuel borne catalyst designed to aid regeneration of particulate filters. It is suitable as an aftermarket replacement for the following part numbers: Eolys Fluid, Eolys DPX 42, Eolys 176, Peugeot/Citroen Particulate Fluid 973665, Peugeot/Citroen Particulate Fluid 997995, Peugeot/Citroen Particulate Fluid 973685, Peugeot/Citroen Particulate Fluid 973686, Peugeot/Citroen Particulate Fluid C973685, Peugeot/Citroen Particulate Fluid C973686, and Ford Particulate Fluid 1337646. Available on the market is also the 4.5 litre.
8. V-Switch by Viezu Technologies
We continue our list of DPF cleaning solutions with yet another product, the V-Switch by Viezu Technologies. This portable device features a wide range of diesel treatment solutions. The V-Switch is working on both petrol and diesel cars, and features 2 mapped files. This can cover an economy and performance map, blend or valet (reduced power), and Diesel Particulate Filter removal. In addition, V-Switch is a self use system.
7. EB-9001 EvacuBlast DPF Blast Cabinet
The above picture is a DPF system that was cleaned with an ACM (Automated Clean Machine), a rather ineffective solution that leaves signs of uncleaned cells – see the black dot in the middle, as well as the pie-shaped black areas. With Evacublast EB-9001 Diesel Particulate Filter Blast Cabinet you are ensured that the entire DPF is thoroughly cleaned from both ends multiple times. Furthermore, Evacublast uses “Dual Force” technology – meaning that compressed air and intense vacuum are used at the same time to push from the top and pull from the bottom, thus forcing out the contaminated soot from the filter cells. The system’s efficiency is due to the built-in pressure differential test system that evaluates the filter before, throughout and after the process is completed. Each filter has a different “flow pattern” that usually creates more soot concentration in particular areas of the DPF.
6. EB-9002 DPF Regeneration Oven
The EB-9002 DPF Regeneration Oven has been designed to aid with the cleaning process of dirty filters. In particular cases a filter could need to be baked. Why? Because the amounts of wet soot and unburned hydrocarbons must be baked in order to regenerate the soot to ash which otherwise can’t be effectively removed with EB-9002 DPF Regeneration Oven. The EB-9002 features a programmed controller to rise the temperature up at an effective rate that will not damage the substrate of the filter. In addition, the Ovens’ “smart technology” ensures the monitoring of the DPF during this regeneration process, ensuring there’s no uncontrolled regeneration to the filter. As temperature goes up, the DPF will start its own regeneration process. If the temp goes higher than permitted, the oven will pause the process until the DPF temperature drops and has stopped its own regeneration; then it will continue its cycle until done. The oven comes in four different sizes, has fully programmable Electronic Temp Controls, and can accommodate multiple DPFs during a single cycle.
5. Insulation Kits for DPF Installations
In lots of cases the DPF installation of an automobile is not correctly data logged. If that’s the case and the temperature readings on the data logger were not correct the DPF will reach its maximum soot load prior to its normal service cycle. The insulation kit can sometimes be applied as a quick fix for a big problem. The insulation wrap will keep the heat in the exhaust longer, so the DPF can self regenerate effectively and in time.
4. FSX SootSucker Dust Collector
The soot disposal and dust collector machine includes automatic online self-cleaning cycle pulses. The collected dust is dropped into a quick-release bottom bucket while operating. The tool has enough volume to operate one FSX Pneumatic DPF Cleaner. Furthermore, the machine features a two stage filtration system.
3. Baumot BA-5000 DPF Cleaning System
The BA 5000 make use of the “air nozzle” technology that automatically works through one channel after another. The displaced ash is caught by the suction device. The BA 5000 is designed to clean the diesel particulate substrate, while also allowing the DPF to be cleaned as part of manufacturer claims, CARB compliance, and general maintenance.
2. Baumot Regeneration Kiln
Yet another product in our list of DPF cleaning solution is the Baumot Regeneration Kiln, a tool for diesel particulate filters that may contain deposited soot or ash particles. The Baumot diesel particulate filter regeneration kiln is controlled electronically, providing with the most efficient and high-rated cleaning service.
1. FSX TrapTester Air Flow Test Bench
This last product is especially calibrated for measuring with great precision the air flows on DPF. It includes one w.g. magnahelic pressure gauge. The FSX TrapTester Air Flow Test Bench is currently being used as the standard measuring device by engine and truck OEM’s.
