Remember our post about the things we hoped would happen at the 2014 Oscars? If not, take a look and then come back, but if you do, then we must say, we got our plenty wishes fulfilled. The 2014 Academy Awards took place a couple of days ago in California and the host was the funny Ellen DeGeneres. If we could sum up the entire ceremony with one sentence, it would be there were no surprises at this year’s Oscars. No surprises about the winners, the jokes and some other things that happened at the 2014 Oscars, but that doesn’t mean that the ceremony wasn’t amazing. We’re going to take a look at 1o great things that happened at the 2014 Oscars, so here goes.
10. The Pizza Thing
If you ask some people, the pizza gag was awful and long. We tend to half agree with those people, it was indeed a bit too long, but we think it was pretty great. I mean, how often do you get to see Brad Pitt wolfing down on some pizza while being impeccably dressed next to Angelina Jolie?! And we also found out he’s cheap?!
9. The Dresses
So many women and so may dresses! Our favorite picks were Lupita Nyong’o who was absolutely stunning in her Prada dress. We particularly adored Jennifer Garner’s bold metallic fringed dress, which was an odd but fitting choice for her.
8. Matthew McConaughey
We’re over the moon Matthew won the Oscar for Best Actor, we adored his speech and his suit, but what made our little black hearts melt was the kiss he shared with his stunning wife, Camila Alves before he got up on stage to accept his well-deserved award. We felt proud to witness such a private and lovely moment between spouses. It was truly touching, as was his speech.
7. 12 Years a Slave Won Best Picture
Steve McQueen was finally recognized by the Academy, after two movies that simply needed to be recognized: Shame and Hunger. We would have voted for 12 Years a Slave, so we’re very happy it won best picture.
6. Cate Blanchett Won
Cate Blanchett deserved her second Oscar! She was so gracious and lovely accepting her award that the Academy should give her an Oscar every year, so that we get to hear her talk while holding an Oscar. Usually, after a few moments in the spotlight, Cate returns to Australia to her family for some R&R. We hope this time, she keeps working!
5. Jared Leto’s Speech
Dallas Buyers Club was one of the best movies of 2014 and Jared Leto’s portrayal of a transgender woman was magnificent. But his Oscar acceptance speed was just as magnificent. It brought tears to our eyes to hear Jared’s story about his teen mother and how she struggled to bring up two boys. I mean, it just made you pick up the phone and call your mother!
4. Benedict Cumberbatch Photoboms U2
When we found out that Benedict Cumberbatch was coming to the Oscars, we knew we would have a precious moment such as the above that happened at the 2014 Oscars. Benedict simply can’t contain his prankster self and when he gets the chance to muck about, he does it. Just look at how serious those U2 guys were and how lovely Benedict managed to steal their thunder. We love you, Benedict!
3. Lupita Danced and Won
Lupita Nyong’o won the Oscar for the Best Actress in a Supporting Role. To say that she deserved it is an understatement. Her speech was splendid, her dress was stunning and her dancing on Pharell William’s Happy made for some great television. The girl has some fine moves, might we add!
2. Jennifer Lawrence Fell Again
We hoped Jennifer Lawrence would fall again at the Oscars and sure enough, she did. We are so happy she didn’t disappoint! This time, she fell on the red carpet and some men helped her up. While falling she tried to cling to someone and she almost scratched the woman in front of her. Jennifer is so hilarious that nobody could ever get mad at her.
1. The Epic Selfie
This above selfie is the most retweeted photo ever to hit Twitter. It was taken by Bradley Cooper at the request of Ellen and it featured Julia Roberts, Brat Pitt, Angelina Jolie, a very happy Kevin Spacey, Jared Leto, Channing Tatum, Lupita Nyong’o and her brother and Meryl Streep. Yes, they’re all there and it’s magnificent. The photo was taken with a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and thanks to the popularity this photo had, Samsung donated three million dollars to the charity. Well done, Samsung!
