With a tidal wave of hype about to land on us with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice arriving on our cinema screens at the end of March, the expectations are that comic fans could soon be enjoying some further DC gaming treats.
The massive comic-book franchise has allowed its heroes to appear in variety of games from next-gen consoles to online poker sites in recent years. So here’s a look back over some of the top ten gaming highlights from this iconic entertainment company.
1. Weird DC Comics characters on early consoles
Even as far back as the 1990s we saw DC Comics characters such as The Flash and Swamp Thing appearing on Nintendo Gameboy and Sega Master System devices. But it wasn’t until the 21st century that things really began to get going with an endless series of comic book characters arriving on our consoles.
2. Movie crossovers
It’s become somewhat customary for DC Comics to accompany many of their biggest blockbusters with a swiftly-released mobile game. Superman received his mobile gaming debut with 2013’s Man of Steel release for iOS and Android devices, and already WB have released a Batman v Superman Who Will Win? browser-game.
3. DC characters are endlessly adaptable
The Batman v Superman movie will also be expected to make its presence felt in other gaming genres as we’ve already seen the likes of a Batman online slots game at Lucky Nugget Casino that makes full use of the Caped Crusader’s iconic motifs amongst the lucrative payouts.
4. Two words: Arkham Knight
And although gamers received some fun slots games of Batman amongst the online poker options, it was last year’s Arkham Knight game that offered perhaps the most immersive Batman gaming experience yet thanks to addictive gameplay and thorough characterisation.
5. Amazing locations
One of the best things about Arkham Knight was the way it provided a beautifully-rendered Gotham City for players to negotiate as they aided Batman in tracking down and eliminating the mysterious Scarecrow super-villain.
6. Phenomenal vehicles
Despite grumbles about the functionality of the Batmobile in the game, the fact that you could now drive such an iconic vehicle led many to commend the game’s developers, Telltale Games, on their successful adaptation of a treasured DC Comics’ franchise.
7. Superman rules!
Batman’s famous rival Superman has unfortunately struggled to gain a gaming release worthy of his reputation, with Superman 64 often being quoted as being the worst game of all time. However, with plans for a new Superman game soon, it’s hoped that he can forge a dynamic comeback.
8. Catwoman
Everybody’s dream comic girl Catwoman even managed to make an appearance on our consoles with 2004’s self-titled release that gave gamers the chance to be Halle Berry!
9. Justice League
Superheroes work best as a team and the frequent releases of Justice League have certainly proved this with a great series of games for the PlayStation and Xbox in 2002 and 2006.
10. Endless gaming futures
And finally, as Telltale are looking likely to release a further instalment to Batman’s gaming career, it’s not just at the online poker sites that you can hope to find DC Comic’s most famous stars in 2016.
