Top 5 Most Outrageous Celebrity Wedding Dresses

Celebrity weddings have always been the delight of the media. I don’t think either of us knows exactly why we take such an interest in two starlets exchanging vows, but maybe this is where “shipping” came from. Unless someone is a sociopath, we all generally take great joy in seeing other people. And, well, this is what weddings are! Two people getting married means that they see a future together, that they are content with each other, and this by itself implies glee. Naturally, it’s not all rose petals and confetti, but this is exactly why celebrity couples have such big fanbases. We don’t get to see the backstage arguments and frustrations; we just see the longing gazes, smiles, and flirtatious banters.

Therefore, it’s not strange that most celebrities have learned to accept the fact that their big day is most likely going to be televised and viewed by thousands of people. When something like this happens, there is no room for errors or tiny mistakes, especially in the age of the Internet – the Internet sees everything. By default, the most attention-worthy element of any wedding is the dress. However, some starlets seem to have missed this memento given their strange attire choices for the big day. These starlets are included in our Top 5 Most Outrageous Celebrity Wedding Dresses.

#5 Sarah Jessica Parker

Celebrity Wedding Dresses

In 1997, Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker tied the knot with Matthew Broderick, her husband as we currently speak. It’s understandable that some women may have grown tired of the plain white dress and wanted a way to either stand out or properly express themselves. However, Parker didn’t seem like she was either of these things, something that made her wedding dress choice all the more shocking. It’s an unwritten rule that no guest or bridesmaid should outshine the bride. It’s another unwritten rule that no one except for the bride should be wearing white. But one of the biggest unwritten rules is that black is a definite no when trying to decide the color of your dress.

I doubt much explanation is needed. Black is considered, in Western areas, at least, a color of sadness and mourning and it wasn’t until a while ago when a bride dressed in black was deemed an offense. Her Vera Wang gown was definitely a beautiful creation, but perhaps not for a wedding. Parker herself later admitted to regretting her decision, saying that if she and Broderick are ever to renew their vows, she will likely opt this time for a classic white.

#4 Nicole Richie

Celebrity Wedding Dresses

Legend Lionel Richie’s daughter is one of the reasons why there should be an alternative show titled Say Yes to the Dresses. When she married Joel Madden in 2010, she went all out for the celebrations, which had everything from a living elephant to a grand total of three wedding dresses. Nicole Richie wore one for the vows, changed into another for dinner, and then into yet another one when the time for the party portion arrived. This, however, isn’t necessarily an unheard of situation, with many women (celebrities or not) often choosing to adopt the same strategy. My guess is that the problem surfaced from the fact that this was clearly intended as a showcase of opulence. You know, since there also was an elephant and all.

#3 Keira Knightley

Celebrity Wedding Dresses

The British actress exchanged vows with James Righton in 2013, an event which caused a big fuss in the media. The reason was definitely surprising. It wasn’t the fact that Knightley had an extravagant gown; it was actually the polar opposite of what most celebrity wedding dresses look like. The short tulle Channel gown is a beautiful creation by itself but as a wedding gown? Underwhelming isn’t even the word to rightfully describe it. What’s worse is that Knightley didn’t even go out of her way to purchase a new item since she had worn the dress before. It doesn’t stop here – the actress chose to wear it again for a red carpet event, leaving everyone with their jaws hanging, and not in a good way.

#2 Marilyn Monroe

Celebrity Wedding Dresses

Arguably the most surprising entry on this list, Marilyn Monroe is a legendary icon of beauty. Her legacy has stretched way beyond her contemporary 50s, with many people still considering her today one of the sexiest women that have ever lived. With such a reputation preceding her, why is it that the blonde bombshell opted for such a peculiar clothing choice when she married Yankees baller Joe DiMaggio? Dressed in a sober skirt suit with a fur collar, Monroe could have been easily mistaken for a funeral attendee if it weren’t for the big smile brightening her face.

This is even stranger as the blonde had made a reputation out of glamorous public events displays where she showcased many gorgeous gowns. One could say that this choice was a subconscious omen for the short-lasting nine-month marriage between the two. And, who knows? Maybe Marilyn truly wasn’t feeling it, although DiMaggio definitely cared about her, as proven by the fact he consequently delivered flowers to her grave two decades after her death.

#1 Pamela Anderson

Celebrity Wedding Dresses

Speaking of sex symbols, Pamela Anderson was for the longest time the image of the perfect woman. The Baywatch star was definitely aware of the aces up her sleeve, which is why she wasn’t one to ever be shy when it came to showcasing them. However, perhaps a wedding wasn’t the best place to do it. To call Anderson’s attire a dress wouldn’t even be accurate.

Certainly, she did wear a (considerably revealing and short) dress when she exchanged the vows with Kid Rock, but the gown didn’t last too long. She changed out of it and revealed her real wedding dress – a white bikini. Many people like to believe that there is something sacred in a marriage, which is why Anderson’s skimpy outfit caused quite the stir in media.

All in all, everybody is free to make the choices they want, especially where fashion is concerned. But maybe it wouldn’t hurt, from time to time, to listen to a little bit of constructive criticism. Some of the celebs on this list had to learn from their mistakes, but you know what they say about history repeating itself. I have no doubt that in ten years we’ll have yet another Top 5 Most Outrageous Celebrity Wedding Dresses list.
