Sometimes, we all need a little help to concentrate and focus on work, school or whatever it is that we want or need to do. That’s not always easy to do, when there are so many distractions all around us or when our brain simply feels tired and unable to focus. Last week we took a look at 10 foods that increase dopamine and that make us happy and today we’re going to see the foods that will help you concentrate and give your brain what it needs to put in the work.
Walnuts not only look like a little brain, they’re actually good for your brain! Snacking on a handful of walnuts will help you improve your memory and concentrate. It’s because they’re a great source of alpha-linolenic acid, which is a omega-3 fatty acid that the body needs to make DHA and ellagic acid, that will protect your brain against free radicals.
We’re not recommending you buy a six pack and get to work, but a glass of beer (that is one glass) can help you get those creative juices flowing and spark up new ideas. If you drink too much, then you’re going to get less focused and you’re not going to give a damn about your paper. It’s a tricky thing, we know, but if you can drink just one glass of beer, then we recommend you do, because it really helps.
8. Ginkgo Biloba
Gingko is also known as the brain herb. It’s used by herbalists and doctors worldwide to enhance memory – it does this by improving blood circulation by dilating the blood vessels. The best time to take Gingko has been proven to be in the morning. So, wake up, take a gingko pill or drink some gingko tea, and start working!
7. Oily Fish
Omega-3 fatty acids are some of the best things for your brain. They’ll not only lower your risk of developing dementia or a stroke, but they’ll help you stay focused and alert. Your long-time memory will also get better if you eat a diet rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. These acids can be found in fatty fish, mostly, but if you are a vegan, then we recommend you consume nuts and seeds (especially flax seeds), as they are very high in Omega-3 acids.
When it comes to foods that will help you concentrate, many studies have proved that people who consume large quantities of berries have a slower rate of age-related memory loss. The magic ingredients in berries that make them so good for your memory and concentration are called flavonoids and anthocyanidins – which are associated with lower rates of cognitive decline. A cup of strawberries and one half cup of blueberries a week are enough to get all the benefits we’ve mentioned.
Glucose is another thing that the brain craves when it is trying to concentrate. Give your brain beans, legumes and whole grains and it will be happy. Give it quinoa, which is the star of the show and your brain will thrive. Quinoa is gluten free, a great source of iron that will oxygenate your brain and also quite yummy.
4. Sugary Foods
Brain loves sugar. Not the type you’d think (the ones in your favorite doughnuts), but the ones your body processes from the carbs you eat. If you’re feeling unable to concentrate, try drinking a glass of soda, or eat some fruits; your body will process them and offer you the much needed memory boost. But, such as the case is with beer, if you have too much, then your memory will turn sluggish.
It’s no news that caffeine will make you more alert, we know, that’s why coffee simply had to be on our list. Caffeine will give you energy and help you concentrate, but keep in mind that the effects are short-term. If you drink too much coffee, then you risk becoming jittery and quite uncomfortable and that’s going to distract you from what it is that you’re doing. If you don’t like the taste of coffee (seriously?!) then you can find caffeine in energy drinks and chocolate.
2. Dark Chocolate
Aside from the caffeine inside dark chocolate, there are also some metabolites called flavonols that will increase blood vessel function which, in turn, improves your memory and cognitive function. Chocolate is also great for improving your mood, relieve pain and is chock-full of antioxidants. I mean, do you really need a reason to eat chocolate?

We know that this list is about foods that will help you concentrate, but not all of us manage to eat a healthy and balanced diet, or include all these foods on our list in our diet.
