Cats are wonderful creatures that make great house pets. Some even might say that this is why the Internet exists, for pictures and videos of cats. Cat lovers agree that the furry felines are capable of immense love and also some creepy behavior that will send shivers down your spine. We like to think that out cats are unique, but a closer inspection into the Internet’s feline population reveals that they’re all equally adorable and insane. If you own a cat, then you know a lot about cats, from its little quirks to some foods your cat should never eat. In today’s article we’re going to take a look at some weird things cats do, from bolting out of a room in the dead of night, to sleeping on their owner’s faces and plotting to kill them.
10. Cover Their Poop
Cats cover their poop because they’re prey animals and leaving a scent behind would attract larger predators or alarm the prey. This primordial instinct of covering up tracks is also present when the cat handles food. It’s not trying to bury it because it thinks it is poop, it’s merely saving it for later. Thank God there’s no dirt in the house, or the cat would constantly eat dirt.
9. Head Bonks
Cats love giving head bonks. Cats love rubbing their faces and side of the heads on people because it’s how they’re transferring their signature smell onto those objects. It’s called bunting and if they’re doing it to you, then it’s their way of saying You’re mine, human! Enjoy it, because it’s one of the loveliest things a cat will do to show its affection.
8. Lift Their Butts
The elevator butt is something all cats do. It’s not to offend you! It’s their way of saying Hello, how are you? You can try to pet the cat or scratch it on its back, just don’t laugh, it’ll hurt its feeling. Female cats that have not been spayed will do this to attract male cats – it’s the feline equivalent of putting on a pair of tight jeans and going out.
7. They Roll Like a Dog
When cats roll like dogs, back and front, it simply means that they’re enjoying themselves and they want you to know it. Cats are really clean creatures, who don’t like to get dirty, but if you expose a cat to a new smell or object, you’ll see they like to roll in it, get all that new scent on them. It’s the same when humans find an object they like a lot, they simply won’t let it go.
6. Keep Their Mouths Open When Smelling
Have you noticed that when cats smell something they’re intrigued about they open their mouths as if trying to smell with them? Well, in fact really do smell with their mouths. It’s called the flehmen response and the cat is picking up pheromones and other scents through its vomeronasal organ which is situated on the roof of the mouth. Another one of those weird things cats do!
5. Paw Kneading
Not all cats knead their paws, but those who do are beyond cute. Scientists say that this behavior is left over from their infancy when they used to knead their mother’s bellies to stimulate milk production.
4. Bird Calling
Have you ever noticed your cat staring out the window at birds or moths? If you have, then you probably noticed the sound they make. It’s a type of clicking sound that is similar to the sound dolphins use to echolocate things. Some say they make these sounds to attract the insects or birds, but we think it’s just their way of messing with us.
3. Taking Forever to Enter or Exit a Room Once the Door is Open
One of the best things about owing a cat is admiring them when they take their time to enter or exit a room, while you hold the door open for them. They take their time in the finest manner possible. There’s so rush, we don’t need to be anywhere, but here. People can learn a thing of two from cats in the patience department.
2. Bolting Out of a Room
This is probably one of the weirdest things a cat will do in its lifetime. One moment they’re sitting calm and composed licking themselves or listening to the silence and the other they’re bolting out of the room, as if Satan himself were after them. This again, has to do with them being predators. The instinct kicks in, so when they gotta run, they gotta run!
1. Sleeping on Your Face
When a cat is sleeping on your face, know that it’s not trying to suffocate you to death, so that it can take control of your house and food. At least that’s what we hope. Cats really enjoy warmth and the face is usually the warmest and most exposed part of the body. If you’re not comfortable with your cat staying on your face, take a few pictures and remove it, in that order.
Does your cat do any of these things? Do you think cats are plotting to kill us and take over the world? To be honest, that wouldn’t come as a surprise. Do you know any other weird things cats do? If you do, then share them with us in the comment section below.
