Black Friday has come and gone and the holiday shopping season is getting quite agitated. Everybody’s scrambling to get those last few gifts in for the extended family as well as for picky people on Santa’s list. But the eternal question remains: What do you get your significant other? Most Americans leave shopping for their spouse or partner for the very last minute, usually because they have no idea what to get for them! Here’s a shortlist of our picks for what to get for your husband or boyfriend for the holiday season.
10. An Ugly Sweater
Remember those sweaters that your grandma or your aunt used to crochet and bring you for Christmas? They were always horrible, right? Not anymore. Ugly sweaters are selling like hot cakes this holiday season with the ugliest ones going for more than just the moderately ugly ones. Of course your boyfriend or husband might not be ‘hipstery’ enough to wear it ironically on his own. Persuade him to wear it for Christmas dinner nonetheless. You might start a new trend within your extended family!
9. A BBQ tool Set and Apron
Every man likes to see a little bit of James Bond in himself. Give him a license to grill with a complex barbecue set and add an apron so he can be properly dressed for it (and not get bbq ribs all over his dress shirts). He might have to wait until spring to use it but the wait is worth it.
8. Debrett’s Guide for the Modern Gentleman
The standards of manliness have moved on quite a bit from their past 1950’s chain smoking, whiskey swilling male cliché roots (I’m looking at you Don Draper!). Today men are still all about presenting a comprehensive strong outer appearance but the style has evolved a bit from the slick clean-shaven look. The modern man can look good in three-day stubble and doesn’t have to have a crew cut. The Debrett’s Guide is perfect for just such little tidbits of information and helping any man turn into a gentleman.
7. Gym Membership
The gift that keeps on giving! While you can’t admire a gym membership like you can a new phone, a membership to a fancy gym is both a status symbol, a reinforcement aid for your husband’s dedication to work-out (or a prod in the right direction) and a gift that will help him stay fitter and live longer.
The rumors of denim’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. You can still pull off denim jeans as a man and with some of the newer models, you can do it while looking stylish. So give the gift of Levi’s this Christmas!
5. TouchTec Leather Driving Gloves
Leather gloves are incredible. Driving gloves are just as cool. However they both present the same problem: they cannot be used with most modern technology as leather and pleather do not conduct electricity. Well the nice people at broleco have fixed that for us by creating conductive leather. You can now buy a stylish pair of gloves for your SO and he’ll still be able to answer the phone when you call him!
4. Laser Tag/Paintball Gear
Traditionally, men were the hunter half of hunter-gatherer societies and while some modern research points out that it was the gatherers that were overall more successful than the hunters in such tribes men are still competitive ‘hunters’ in most of what they do. Why not encourage that buy buying your loved one equipment for paintball or laser tag?
3. A New Watch
Men don’t regularly wear jewelry (after a certain age at least) so they go nuts over watches and other discreet accessories like cufflinks or tiepins that can end up just as expensive as gold necklaces for women, sometimes! A new watch might be an investment but it will be one dearly appreciated.
2. A New Perfume or Cologne
Here’s one with which you can never go wrong especially if you’re on a tight budget or running out of time for shopping. But a new, generally appreciated cologne or perfume, either one that you know he likes, or one that you like. Men always appreciate perfumes and cosmetics, especially as many are not to keen on shopping for them on their own.
1. A New Smartphone
We tackled the theme of high-tech gifts before and, surprise-surprise, smartphones were our no. 1 tech gift idea overall. This holds true if you’re shopping for your husband or boyfriend as well. So there you have it: the best gift for your significant other is a smartphone this Christmas. Happy holidays and have fun shopping!
