Hangovers, we’ve all suffered from them at least once… a week. Although a night out with friends after a long week at the office is just what the doctor ordered, excessive alcohol consumption can make you stay in bed an entire weekend and miss out on all the cool stuff happening around you.
Like any other thing that affects us, around hangover there are many myths. Today we are going to see which ones are completely false and even do more damage than good.
1. Wine does not cause a hangover
It all starts with what you drink. Red wine, in particular, contains tannins, compounds that are known for causing headaches. And beverages such as whiskey give even a sharper hangover sensation. If you are worried that you will suffer from a night of partying, choose beverages such as beer, liquor, vodka or gin.
2. Alcohol helps you sleep better
On the contrary, alcohol disrupts sleep even more. It is probably true that once you have consumed alcohol, you fall asleep more easily, but the sleep quality drops dramatically. Following alcohol consumption, sleep is not as restful as it should be and duration tends to be shorter.
3. Coffee’s ideal remedy
Yes, coffee will wake you up in the morning, but it will not get rid of that hangover sensation. Coffee will only further dehydrate the body, which is already weakened by alcohol. Caffeine even worsens a hangover state. After a night of drinking, experts’ advice is to avoid caffeine and drink plenty of water.
4. A hangover is not that serious
A hangover is simply the body’s reaction to too much alcohol poisoning. Drinking too much alcohol seriously undermines the central nervous system. The chemical imbalance in the body leads to severe headaches, dizziness, nausea.
5. After drinking, do not go to bed before eating a bowl of pasta
This theory bad for two reasons. First, eating pasta at night before bed, after having previously consumed a quantity of alcohol, is no good. The food in the stomach must be prior to drinking alcohol in order to have any effect. Second, while any food can slow the absorption of alcohol, fat helps best. So before the first drink, it is recommended to eat a steak or pizza for an easier hangover. Remember that eating fatty foods after alcohol consumption, will make your stomach hurt a lot.
6. If you drink alcohol in a particular order, you will not have a headache
The order of drinks is not important, the most important remains the amount of alcohol consumed. However, some people, for example are more resistant to beer and less resistant to vodka or stronger alcohol.
7. Alcohol affects men and women equally
The negative effects of alcohol, including a hangover, are stronger on women. The explanation is simple: women get drunk easier compared to men because men have a higher water content in their bodies, which can dilute alcohol. When a woman consumes the same amount of alcohol as a man, she will have more alcohol in your blood compare to him.
8. Continue with alcohol the next morning
Continuing to drink the next morning will only make things worse. And this myth was probably invented by those who wanted an excuse to drink even more alcohol.
9. Take pain pills before going to bed
Painkillers have an effect in a couple of hours, so you might feel better in the morning. However, specialists recommend to take pills when you first wake up. Doctors do not recommend any drugs in the presence of alcohol, since the effects pills are completely changed by alcohol. If you take pills, alcohol liver toxicity increases. So, you need to suffer in pain.
10. Alcohol gets rid of stress
If you feel stressed, then you are drinking for the wrong reasons. Opt for exercise, yoga, meditation or seek professional help. But drowning your sorrows in alcohol never helped anyone resolve their problems. At least not on the long term.
