Movies are something we always seem to can’t live without. Some make it their life’s mission, others use them to escape day to day live and some of us use them to build dreams. And yes, the average movie lover often recites movie quotes in day to day conversation. But while not all of us can actually recite entire scenes, there are some quotes that have withstood the test of time and some important movie critique and have made it in the top 100 Movie Quotation in American Cinema List.
“Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.”
Curiously enough the number one quote has withstood 74 years of time as Gone With the Wind was released in 1939. It represents the last words Rhett Butler to Scarlett O’Hara at the end of the film when he leaves her. This line comes with a lot of conflict during production as the word “damn” had been prohibited by the 1930 Motion Picture Association’s Production Code. The loophole was that the word could be used when it was essential and required for the portrayal in proper context of the scene or dialogue.
2. “I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse”
This popular movie line is the second most popular movie line in AFI 100 Movie Quotes. The interesting thing about this quote is that it originates in Honoré de Balzac’s novel “Le Pére Goriot”.
“If you listen real close, you can hear them whisper their legacy to you. Go on, lean in. Listen, you hear it? —- Carpe — hear it? – Carpe, Carpe Diem, seize the day boys, make your lives extraordinary.”
This beautiful line from the “Dead Poets Society” is spoken by John Keating, an English teacher in a conservative boy’s school while trying to inspire his students to follow their dreams while on a trip of self-exploration outside the classroom.
“You know what’s wrong with you, Miss Whoever-you-are? You’re chicken, you’ve got no guts. You’re afraid to stick out your chin and say, “Okay, life’s a fact, people do fall in love, people do belong to each other, because that’s the only chance anybody’s got for real happiness.” You call yourself a free spirit, a “wild thing,” and you’re terrified somebody’s gonna stick you in a cage. Well baby, you’re already in that cage. You built it yourself. And it’s not bounded in the west by Tulip, Texas, or in the east by Somali-land. It’s wherever you go. Because no matter where you run, you just end up running into yourself.”
Even though this quote is not in the top 100 List it is one of my personal favorites and I could not let it out. This line belongs to Paul Varjak in Breakfast at Tiffany’s as he is falling in love with the naïve yet eccentric Holly Gollightly, the most memorable role of Audrey Hepburn.
“Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy night!”
This famous line belongs to Margo Channing in 1950’s All About Eve. This is the story of life around and in the theater where Bette Davis plays an aging star.
“Find a truly original idea. It is the only way I will ever distinguish myself. It is the only way I will ever matter.”
This memorable line belongs to Russel Crowe who played a Noble Prize winner, the mathematician John Nash who suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and delusional episodes.
“Go ahead, make my day”
This witty catchphrase belongs to Harry Callahan in the movie Sudden Impact who, while having his morning coffee discovers a robbery and after shooting the robbers in a shootout, the surviving robber grabs the waitress and threatens to shoot her.
“Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
This quote made it to number 20 on the 100 Best Movie Quotes List and belongs to Rick Blaine in Casablanca.
“The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes us reach for more, that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds. And that’s what you’ve given me. That’s what I’d hoped to give you forever.”
Another quote that has not made the list but that is as worthy if not more worthy of this list. This line belongs to Noah, the young man Allie fell in love with when she was young but from whom faith separated her.
10. “I’m dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest… Honestly, it’s the honest ones you want to watch out for, because you can never predict when they’re going to do something incredibly…stupid.”
It is always best to end on a happy note and in the spirit of honesty that the last quote instills there are few movies I find funnier than Pirates of the Caribbean where Jack Sparrow (Jonny Depp) really gives the entire movie flavor. I therefore chose this quote because, in all its fun nature, captures an essential human truth.
