Basic Instinct (1992) may not be a romantic movie to watch on Valentine’s Day, but it is probably one of the most famous thrillers out there. In my humble opinion, it is a great movie and the embodiment of the 90’s, when the eyebrows were bushy, smoking anywhere was allowed, and you drank and did cocaine like there was no tomorrow. Bisexuality was a novelty. Michael Douglas was hot as hell and Sharon Stone was yet to see the inside of a plastic surgeon’s office. Now everyone’s drinking green tea while puffing away on electronic cigarettes and getting their faces pulled back. We love that movie so much, that we thought of making a short list of 10 things we learned from Basic Instinct (1992) and we hope you enjoy it!
10. Michael Douglas is Sexy
Well, we know that we’re repeating ourselves with this statement, but the man was very hot in that movie. He had lust written all over his face and that made him the sex symbol he was in the 90’s. To be honest, I still would…, even now when he’s 100 years old and looking twice as old.
9. The Only Way to Write a Story is to Live It
To be honest, Catherine Tramell wasn’t too much of a writer if every single detail of her story was based on reality. But I guess the woman needed her inspiration! Heck, if I had the chance to hang around (and when I say hang around…) 90’s Michael Douglas, I’d probably write the novel of the century, I would be so inspired (and when I say inspired…).
8. The More Dangerous the Woman, The Better the Sex
Yes, this statement has more truth to it than we’d like to accept. And we, the children of the 90’s, learned this from Basic Instinct. Isn’t it lovely when you get a character that you’re afraid of and attracted to at the same time?
7. Don’t Watch Erotic Thrillers with Family
I had to learn this on my own. I was minding my own business, when all of a sudden, an aunt pops up and joins me on the couch while Basic Instinct was on TV. Michael and Sharon were sharing a very intimate evening while I was basically frozen next to my aunt. The woman didn’t even blink, so I’ll give her that. Learn from my mistakes, don’t watch Basic Instinct with family and if they happen to pop up in the room, just leave. You’ll at least get to keep your dignity.
That’s it; that’s another thing we learned from Basic Instinct. To be honest, I think I learned about the existence of bisexuality from Basic Instinct. I was just a kid when the movie came out and when I saw Catherine and Roxy kissing my entire world was turned upside down! So, that IS possible! Thank you, Basic Instinct for getting me out of the cave I was living in and into the real world!
5. People Used to Smoke a Lot in the 90’s
At the beginning of the movie Catherine refuses to understand that Nick quit smoking and keeps offering him cigarettes. Even if you are not a smoker, the movie compels you to light one, just for the sake of it. It was the cigarettes’ hay day, an era which is long gone. I’m not saying we need to miss it, but cigarettes made for some good scenes.
4. Bushy Eyebrows are Hot
Everything was bushy in the early 90’s and thank the Lord for that, because in the 00’s hair became the number one enemy and it was targeted from all areas. The bushy eyebrow is making a quiet come back, so go on and rock a Catherine Tramell!
3. Don’t Hook Up with Your Therapist
This lesson was reiterated in Basic Instinct 2, so it appears that the producers and writers really wanted to let the world know that it was a bad idea to date your therapist. And when I say date… It’s not only immoral, but also illegal in some states.
2. Underwear is Overrated
Well, to be honest, underwear isn’t overrated. But it would have been nice if it were. Who in their right mind throws on a white dress with no underwear on?! I don’t think I’ve met anyone brave enough to do that. Besides, it’s nice to have underwear on, isn’t it? It makes your lady bits feel safe. It’s like the underwear is saying don’t worry, no matter what happens, I am here for you, lady bits!
1. Ice Cubes aren’t Sexy
Why use ice cubes, when you can be a sexy beast breaking ice with an ice pick? If Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas like rough edges on their ice, then you, too, must like them if you have any aspiration of being considered sexy. What are you waiting for?! Go to your local kitchen supply store and get yourself an ice pick!
