Being passionate about your job usually translates into getting up early so you won’t be stuck in traffic on your way to work. Or even putting in some additional hours, helping out a colleague and going that extra mile for your company. But when it comes to actors, what does it take to go the extra mile? We’ve seen how Heath Ledger changed under the force of one of his most famous roles, The Joker. Now everybody’s keeping their eyes peeled on Jared Leto who has been cast to play the Joker in the 2016 movie Suicide Squad. Based on past experiences, Leto doesn’t shy away from becoming one with the character. Keep reading for a recap of his queer behavior up till now.
8. He won’t break character for anything
There’s word on the block saying that Jared Leto stayed in character even when the cameras stopped rolling. This is not uncommon among actors, but it’s certainly a different experience when we’re talking about the Joker and his quirky evil ways. What does this mean exactly for cast breaks? Leto usually spent his coffee breaks isolated, barely exchanging words with the other co-stars. While we acknowledge and admire his strong devotion, we also have to admit it’s fairly creepy.
7. Scot Eastwood took one step back
In talking about Jared Leto’s Joker impersonation it’s not an overstatement to say that the raw authenticity easily gives you the creeps. To support this, Clint Eastwood’s son, who is making his cinematographic debut in Suicide Squad, Scot Eastwood, admitted to be a little freaked out by the Joker, so we can only hope he won’t get discouraged so early his acting career.
6. Killing kids
There are also some rumors hinting to a gruesome scene from the comic book. This would involve Jason Todd being beat with a crowbar. Apparently, we’ll be seeing this on the screens in Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, which presumably coincides with Suicide Squad. We can’t deny it would be interesting to watch Leto’s take on this one.
5. On set therapy
Warner Bros. decided to bring a life coach on the set of Suicide Squad. One of their reasons could be their past experience with Heath Ledger’s Joker who overdosed in 2008, after playing the famous role. To make sure the movie turns out as twisted as possible, the actors are pushed to give their darkest performances. The decision to have a therapist at hand could have been a mixture of caution and fear, as well as determination to deliver outstanding performances while still protecting the actors’ well being.
4. Lady trouble
Harley Quinn and the Joker’s relationship is far from stable and warm. Whether we’re talking about the comic books, the cartoon or the games, the two of them have an unusual dynamic that continues in Suicide Squad. What can you expect from them in this upcoming release? Get ready for some dark scenes that involve Harley keeping the Joker at gun point and him slapping her down to the ground.
3. Love trinkets
If you need even more proof for Leto’s loyalty to his character, keep reading about his present to Margot Robbie, who plays Harley Quinn. The gift box she received contained a live rat and was accompanied by a love letter, written in the unique style of the Joker. We can only imagine Margot was swept off her by this touching gesture. So what happened to the live gift? The rat was cared after by the entire cast, but it later ended up residing in Guillermo del Toro’s house.
2. An Affection token
But Margot wasn’t the only one to receive the Joker’s gifts. The rest of the crew wasn’t forgotten and they each got a letter and a short clip from the Leto, in which he apologized for missing out on the rehearsals. Will Smith, who plays Dead Shot, received a handful of bullets, while the other actors received a dead pig. There’s no doubt Jared Leto got into the Joker’s mind quickly, but we can only hope the Joker won’t get into his mind too soon. While his gifts can be seen as bizarre jokes, it remains for those who received the gifts to decide how unsettling the entire experience was.
1. He goes out with a BANG!
We’re still a bit unclear about the Joker’s specific role in Suicide Squad. What is certain is that he is brought to Belle Reve where he offers info about Batman, after which he ends up behind bars. But he doesn’t stay in a cage for long and his escape is shortly followed by a killing spree that presumably ends the movie on a dark note.
