Now aren’t you happy it’s Christmas? We hope everybody liked the gifts and the Christmas dishes were spectacular, but this time of the year is also for rest and for some fun. So whether you’re stuck at home with nothing to do, or having friends and family over for the holidays, there’s one thing that never fails when you’re trying to plan out activities for the season. Watching Christmas movies is one of the favorite pastimes of the holiday season, and the abundance of re-runs on every channel will have you wondering which to choose. Let’s have a look at ten of the best Christmas movies to watch over and over. And over again.
1. How the Grinch stole Christmas (2000)
This is a remake of the classic cartoon based on the book by Dr. Seuss and it’s a joy to watch, especially if you have kids around. There’s a deep underlying moral to the storyline, and the message is optimistic and goes perfectly with the holiday spirit. Did we mention it features Jim Carrey as The Grinch?
2. Elf (2003)
This heart-warming family comedy / fantasy movie about a human raised as an elf at the North Pole is not one you want to miss. Fundamentally the story of a quest for identity and family, it has all the makings of a wonderful Christmas movie: Santa, elves, New York City during Christmas, and unexpected yet awww-inducing changes of heart. The cast is also gorgeous, including Zooey Deschanel and Will Ferrel, to name just a few, thus making this film one of the best Christmas movies to watch over and over.
3. Fred Claus (2007)
A very corporate take on Santa and Christmas, this movie is fundamentally about estranged brothers working together for a common cause. Of course, all the auditing, efficiency, scams and financial issues make it a little too corporate for our tastes, but that doesn’t mean you can’t watch it and see for yourself. Why we think it’s watchable? Well let’s see – perhaps because it’s the first time we’re given a more down-to-earth perspective on Santa and the problems he’s facing?
4. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
This is it – the clash of the holidays! This animation is fun and entertaining for the entire family. What do you think happens when the king of Halloweentown discovers Christmastown? All you have to do to find out is watch this movie with your loved ones this Christmas and you won’t regret a minute of it. We promise!
5. The Santa Clause (1994)
Part comedy, part drama, part family movie, we really like this one. It’s hard being a divorced father, caring for your son for the holidays, but it gets even harder if you happen to accidentally kill Santa and have to take his place in order to save Christmas. Follow the adventures of Scott Calvin as he tries his best to be Santa Claus.
6. Jingle All the Way (1996)
We only have one thing to say about this movie: Arnold Schwarzenegger. He’s not shooting guns, but he’s still got his trademark accent, and the misadventures he goes through while trying to get his son a Turbo Man action figure just before Christmas will crack you up. This one’s a bunch of laughs, and it’s definitely worth seeing. Probably one the best Christmas movies in the world.
7. Miracle on 34th street (1994)
Yet another heart-melting family movie to watch, while cozying up under a blanket with your loved ones. Susan knows for a fact there is no such thing as Santa, until she meets someone who really believes he’s the genuine article. And then she receives the most important gift of all: something to believe in. Featuring child-star Mara Wilson, also known for her role in Matilda.
8. The Polar Express (2004)
This movie is simply about miracles that come to those who believe. A young boy boards a magical train on Christmas Eve, headed for the North Pole and Santa. Beyond the Christmas feeling, this is a story of self-discovery, and the wonders of life. As a bonus, it features Tom Hanks!
9. A Christmas Carol (2009)
This modern adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel is a Christmas must-see. Because of the moral of the story, because of the wonderful visuals, and last but not least, because of Jim Carrey staring in multiple roles and acing every one of them. Put this on your watch-list for this year, and enjoy it on a lazy Sunday morning with nothing to do, as it will forever remain one of the best Christmas movies to watch over and over again.
10. Home Alone (1990)
Even though it’s been 23 years, this family comedy has become a staple of Christmas. The story of the 8-year old boy accidentally left at home when his family travels to Paris for the holidays is funny, relaxing, and goes well with good food, a warm house and friends and family around you. The stupidity of the burglars will crack you up and the ingenuity of the young kid will have you feeling sorry for them.
Since we are sure you already saw all these movies at least once, just like everybody else, there is no less true that there are a few best Christmas movies to watch every year, with the same guilty pleasure and a smile in the corner of your lips.
