Remember that poster from the movie Nymphomaniac, in which we see Charlotte Gainsbourg between two black men? Well, it sparked a lot of controversy and kept the headlines for weeks on end. It also inspired us with this top of best love triangles in movies.
In films, like in real life, taboos are eliminated one by one and the prude risk of becoming a minority. So it’s no surprise that movies about love triangles are treated with a disarming naturalness and don’t enable problems of morality, but rather of taste. It’s a very sensitive topic, so it’s no surprise that a lot of movies on the issue appeared. Let’s see a few couples consisting of 3 people who entered cinema history.
1. Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Woody Allen placed the action in Barcelona and the three characters sharing the same bed are just as hot as the weather there: Scarlett Johansson, Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz.
German filmmaker Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, Winter Sleepers) presents to us a story of a love triangle consisting of a couple in their 40s and a much younger man. Hana and Simon have been together for 20 years and seem to have a somewhat a balanced relationship. Everything will change when they will meet Adam, a young man whom they both fall in love with, separately, without knowing about each other. Then, a period of emotional confusion follows, then more sex, and if we look at the trailer … an unexpected pregnancy.
3. Dangerous Liaisons
Glen Close, Michelle Pfeiffer and John Malkovich in a movie about immoral relationships and amorous intrigues in 1760s France. Urged by his mistress, the Marquise de Merteuil (Glen Close), the faithful Vicomte de Valmont (John Malkovich) seduces Madame de Tourvel (Michelle Pfeiffer) to win a bet. But things get complicated when he falls in love with her.
In Oliver Stone’s thriller, Blake Lively, Aaron Taylor- Johnson and Taylor Kitsch live a happy life together, no one has any problem. Both are growers of marijuana and the three live in luxury, indulging in pleasures of all kinds. Until they get the attention of Mexican drug dealers.
5. Y tu mama tambien
A sexy road trip full of adventure, but with a sad ending. A romantic drama about two Mexican teenagers who embark on a journey together with a mature woman who steals their heart. The film is directed by Alfonso Cuaron and the triangle is formed by Diego Luna, Gael García Bernal and Ana López Mercado.
6. The Dreamers
Bertolucci pays tribute to youth, whose representatives are Matthew (Michael Pitt), Isabelle (Eva Green) and Theo (Louis Garrel). The love story is set in Paris in the 60s-70s and the action tests their limits and experience, but at the same time they debate the political and social issues of the times in which they live.
7. Bin Jip
A troubling Korean drama directed by master Kim Ki Duk whose title was translated simple and to the point: 3 Iron. The unusual film tells the story of a young man who lives in strangers’ houses when they are away for a longer period and who falls for a woman abused by her husband.
One girl, two boys, three possibilities. As a student you are free to experiment, but Alex (Lara Flynn Bolye) cannot decide between the two roommates (Stephen Baldwin and Josh Charles), so she is sleeping with both of them.
9. On the Road
In the screening of Kerouac’s novel, inhibitions don’t really have a purpose, since we are talking about the beat generation! The characters talk about philosophy, they drink, take drugs and go throughout America in search of meaning. Kristen Stewart is Marylou, Dean Moriarty’s partner (Garrett Hedlund), but she does not hesitate to also share her bed with shy Sal Paradise (Sam Riley).
10. The Graduate
The movie earned Mike Nichols an Academy Award for directing. Dustin Hoffman is trapped in a complicated emotional dilemma: mother (Anne Bancroft) or daughter (Katherine Ross)?
