Since most of you will be traveling for New Year’s Eve (you lucky!) and this time of year is pretty crowded with families coming to visit and kids that need stuff for school, you probably need a good check list to get you through. So, here are ten things you need to do before you leave on vacation.
1. Make sure you have good insurance coverage
Although a vacation is a spectacular time when you get to see new places and new people, it is still a voyage into the unknown. And a lot of things can happen. God forbid you should I injure yourself while skiing. But a good insurance coverage can take care of everything in care the unexpected happens. So, you should review your policy and maybe see your insurance agent if you gave any questions.
2. Take care of your pet
If you will be taking your pet on vacation, then you are good to go. But if not, you will need to find accommodation for him. Ask family or friends (and along with the pet, give them enough food, toys and any other thing the pet needs) or place him into a pet hotel for the holidays.
3. Keep your house safe
Use an alarm system for the apartment or a light sensor in front of the entrance door. But the best would be to ask a neighbor to be alert to what is happening in your absence. An alarm is mandatory during the holidays, because most robberies occur this time of year.
4. Do not give the impression that you left home
Leave the curtains drawn and an economic light burning in the hall. Do not reset your answering machine saying that you are going on holiday, many thieves try using this method to check. Eventually directs all calls on your mobile phone.
5. Close all the windows
Do not forget to close all windows when you leave, no matter what floor you live on. A strong wind or storm can make a mess in the house or it can break windows.
6. Unplug appliances
Fridge (if empty), televisions, computers, iron, etc. Also stop water and gas from their taps, not to have unpleasant surprises.
7. Do something about your plants
If one of your neighbors has a spare key to your place, you can ask him to water your plants. Or if you do not want to bother anyone with this, know that there are some cool DIY watering tips for when you are way. And they work!
If you leave on vacation for more than two weeks, you might find it useful to find out if the phone / internet company if can temporarily suspend your subscription while you’re on vacation. As soon as you get back, the services will be resumed within 24 hours. This way you don’t have to pay for a half month of unused services.
9. Pay the bills
Before leaving, go to the bank and pay your rates, mobile phone bill, cable and the Internet, and other debts that you have. It is totally bad to get back from vacation (possibly with no money!) and wake up with your mobile phone suspended or threatening envelopes from the bank.
10. Just breath and pack!
Now that all of the above mentioned are taken care of, it is time to pack. Do not forget the following:
Toiletries: deodorant, perfume, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, comb, hair brush, shaving foam, shampoo and hair conditioner, tampons, makeup kit, makeup remover, Fohn, nail clippers, mirror, towels, scissors, toilet paper, napkins.
