These are ones of the most famous pictures in the world, even though they are very shocking. Shocking pictures are often a necessary dose of reality. Living in our comfortable realities, we cannot imagine,we refuse to believe, or ignore the fact that other people have horrible lives, that they die in tragic circumstances when they were supposed to live many more years, or that there are children who are seeing, or experiencing things that not even adults could handle, when they should happily play with their friends. These are 10 of the famous pictures that shocked the world.
1. Omarya Sanchez,1985
Omarya Sanchez, one of the victims of the Nevado Del Ruiz volcano eruption in 1985, was photographed while trying to stay alive after being trapped under water and mud by the walls of her own home. She died after almost 3 days because of hypothermia and gangrene at 13 years old. Her sufferance and death was watched live by the entire world. The poor little girl tried to be brave and even gave an interview. At the end, she started to hallucinate saying that she is late for school. The pump necessary to drag the water and save her life arrived broken two hours before she died. This picture was taken by Frank Fournier not long before her death.
2. Iraqi war prisoner,2003
An Iraqi prisoner of war tries to comfort his four -year-old son at the base camp of the US army. The little boy was terrified at seeing his father hooded and handcuffed. Later, the man’s hands were freed so that could make his child feel better. There is nothing worse than a child who is scared or suffering. And in this world that we created, to many babies are in agony!
3. Buddhist monk protesting 1963
This photo was taken by Malcolm W. Browne for the Associated Press and shows the image of a Buddhist monk named Thich Quang Duc who is protesting against the persecution of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese government. He set himself on fire and died without making a sound or any movement.
4. Children escaping from napalm accident, 1972
These children are being evacuated after the South Vietnamese planes accidentally dropped napalm on South Vietnamese soldiers and civilians.
5. Bhopal Gas tragedy, 1984
This is the photo of a man burying his baby after the Bhopal Gas disaster which took place in 1984. A leak from the Union Carbide India Limited pesticide plant in Bhopal, which set free methyl isocyanate gas into the air was responsible for the death of more than 15,000 people . This heart breaking photo became the symbol of the tragedy.
6. Falling from the window, 1975
Stanley Forman was very criticized for taking this picture of a woman and her child falling from the window of their burning apartment. According to the source, what happened was that the fire escape collapsed under their feet while they were waiting for the fire fighter who was climbing on a ladder. The mother died, but the child survived, after falling on the mother’s body. I am sure that the woman would be happy to know that!
7. Dorothy’s first day of school, 1957
Dorothy Counts is one of the first black students that were admitted to the Harry Harding highschool. She is mocked by her white colleagues and was redrawn by her parents after only 4 days of attending classes, because she could not handle the abuses aymore. Dr. Edwin Tompkins, a family friend and professor at a black college, is right next to her, but his presence does not seem to discourage anybody.
8. The baby hand, 1999
“The baby hand” is one of the famous pictures which shocked the world. It was taken during a spina bifidus operation by photojournalist Michael Clancy. He was assign to document this operation, but never expected to see the little hand of the 21 weeks unborn baby reaching out and firmly grabbing the hand of the doctor. The photo, first published by USA today circulated around the world as part of the controversy regarding abortion.
9. Starving child watched by a vulture, 1994
The story of this photo is tragic from the beginning to the end: Kevin Carter, the 33-year-old photographer took the shot of a starving little girl who collapsed while struggling to reach the food center in southern Sudan. Only days after winning the Pulitzer Prize for this picture, he committed suicide, being haunted by the terrifying things he saw, or, as some claims, by guilt for not doing something to help the child. The picture caused great controversy and many people wanted to know what happened her. Apparently, she managed to reach the food center and the photographer chased the bird away. However, no one knows if the child survived.
10. Earthquake victims, 1983
A mother finds her 5 babies dead, after a strong earthquake had buried them alive. The picture, taken by photographer Mustafa Bozdemir is illustrating five of the 1,336 victims of the 7.1 magnitude earthquake which devastated Turkey in 1983. These children were sleeping, while their parents were milking the cows, at 5 o’clock in the morning when it all happened.Another famous picture which shocked the world, this heartbraking image is yet one of the thousands such pictures in the world.
