The art of photography is ever changing, ever enriching and to the list of most famous photographers in the world, we are adding new names every year, as there are there are a great number of talented photographers in the world and many others are born every day. Thus this list is subjective, and since it is art we are talking about, should be subjective. In no particular order, here is my choice of the 10 most famous photographers of all time:
1. Elliott Erwitt
Elliott Erwitt was born in France on 1928 to Russian immigrant parents. His experience, talent and skills are undeniable and are certified by a lifetime of seeing his pictures published in all the important magazines in the entire world. He is the author of more than 20 photography books and with galleries battling for his newest works, there is no wonder that Elliott Erwitt is the best of the best…
2. James Nachtwey
“I have been a witness, and these pictures are my testimony. The events I have recorded should not be forgotten and must not be repeated.” This is what you can read as soon as you open the photographer’s personal site. And it could not be more accurate: one of the best photojournalists in the world-and photojournalism is indeed a domain where talent does not lack,- James Nachetwey deserves his second place on this list, because of his talent, commitments and courage!
3. Annie Leibovitz
I chose Annie Leibovitz because, even though I am not familiar with her works , I see her everywhere on the internet: she seems to be among everyone’s favorites and thus, a list of famous photographers should include her. Born in 1949 Annie did everything a great photographer is expected to do: books, magazines, galleries, celebrity portraits (she is known for creating shocking celebrity portraits, see famous photo: Whoopi Goldberg).
4 .Steve McCurry
Steve McCurry being one of my favourite famous photographers, I could not leave him aside, could I? While people usually do not know who he is, everybody have seen his works, and especially, everyone knows about „The Afghan Girl”, one of the most famous portraits in the world.
5. Henri Cartier-Bresson
Considered „the father of modern photography”, Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004) is one of the best photographers that the world has ever known. He was there to picture the most important events in his lifetime and nevertheless, his favourite type of photography is that of ordinary life (see famous photo above: „Behind Gare Saint Lazare).
6. Ansel Adams
Ansel Adams (1902-1984) is one of the famous photographers that change the face of photography and made it what it is today (1902-1984). Its feel for drama and its passion for the environment combined resulted in a collection of pictures that are treasured today as ones of the most beautiful in the world.
7. Nobuyoshi Araki
One of the most prolific artists in the world, with more than 350 books published, Nobuyoshi Araki ranks among the most famous photographers in the world. His works are often erotic, sometimes even called pornographic- which does not take out of their artistic feel though.
8. David LaChapelle
This photographer has a completely different style and his photography simply sparkles. From the first moment you lay your eyes on the amazing works of David LAChapelle, you are astonished by his originality, by the rich colors he uses and by the subject he chooses. As years pass, he becomes more renowned and his works spread more and more all over the world. I have no problem thus, ranking him among the best photographers of all time.
9. Edward Burtynsky
Edward Burtynsky is a Canadian well-known photographer who amazed the world with his „industrial landscapes” . The originality of his works is undeniable, same as his great talent, but his works may not be on everyone’s taste. He is one of the artists of the 21 century who are forcing us to open our eyes and see beauty in places we never thought about before. Thus, his pictures are screaming at me: you people created this mess, so you better consider it beautiful now!”And i do!
10. Richard Avedon
Leaving Richard Avedon(1923-2004) aside would be a crime, as he is one of the most famous photographers who ever lived. During his 60 years of career, he pictured many celebrities and his portraits were featured in the best magazines of the century. The unique style of the artist distinguishes him among the other photographers of his time and his pictures are valued today as the works of a great master.
