Why should you be on a diet when you’re on vacation? Well, we’re not saying that you should be on a diet, but you shouldn’t binge eat either. Balance at all times is the key to a healthy life! A while back we’ve shared some tips for a perfect vacation and now we’re going to give you 10 tips on how to maintain your weight on vacation. Read on, take notes and have the time of your life this summer!
10. Moderate Your Sweet Indulgencies
Dessert is really awesome and when you’re on holiday you discover the wonderful sweets of other nations and countries… But this doesn’t mean that you should try them all. Try your best to moderate your indulgencies, because if you don’t, you’ll not only gain weight, but you’ll also feel quite crappy from all the sugar.
9. Stay Active
If your hotel has a gym, then you’re lucky! Sneak in a bit of exercise in the morning for that awesome energy boost that adrenaline will give you. If you don’t have access to a gym, why not rent a bike and do some sightseeing? Going to the beach? Get a beach ball and play with it in the water. Do some surfing! Anything that will keep you active.
8. Don’t Allow Yourself to Get too Hungry
Never, ever allow yourself to get too hungry, because then you’ll most definitely overeat when the time to eat comes. To avoid this, always keep some healthy snacks in your bag or simply stop and get a small bagel or whatever healthy option you can find. There will always be one, no matter where you go.
7. Make Your Own Snacks
Before you leave home, make yourself some healthy snacks for the road or for when you’re sightseeing. As mentioned above, it is important you don’t let hunger set in. Nuts are a great healthy snack option. So is granola and it is also dead easy to make and it will not spoil easily. Other ideas would be carrot sticks or even raw cookies.
6. Eat at Local Restaurants
Try, whenever possible, to eat at local restaurants, because those big chain restaurants are always going to have large and fatty portions. A local restaurant means fresher and local ingredients with fewer preservatives. Besides, you’ll get a chance to eat with locals and find out about the country’s food culture.
5. Lay off the Booze
Maintain your weight on vacation has a lot to do with your alcohol intake during that vacation. We all like to relax with a cold one or a nice and fancy cocktail when we’re on holiday, but we should try to limit our alcohol intake as much as we can. Alcohol will not only add on the calories, but it also dehydrates and will leave you feeling tired and grumpy.
4. Pick a Hotel that has a Gym or Healthy Food Options
If you have the option of choosing a hotel that has a gym, then consider yourself lucky and book it! Also, so many hotels these days include breakfast in their offers, and you should choose one that offers some healthy breakfast options.
3. Don’t Be too Hard on Yourself
If you’ve eaten something that you said you wouldn’t or if you’ve eaten more than you should have, don’t be too hard on yourself. You’re on vacation after all and you should enjoy your days off the best way you know how. Tell yourself that you’ll get back on track the moment you arrive home!
2. Explore the Surroundings by Foot
As mentioned earlier, it is very important to stay active when you’re on vacation. The best way to do it is to explore the surroundings by foot. You’ll get to experience the place the same way locals do it. You’ll enjoy the streets and places much better if you’re walking, rather than traveling by car. Besides, it’s the best way to make memories!
1. Know What You’re Eating
It’s hard to know what you’re eating when you’re on holiday. Most of the times, you can’t decipher the menu and you’re ordering based on what looks good. Our number one tip for maintaining a healthy weight while on vacation is to always know what you’re eating. Ask the waiters to tell you exactly what’s in your food. This way you know exactly what to expect, because food surprises aren’t the best of surprises.
