It’s no secret that Austria is the place to go when you are craving for the freedom the slopes and skiing have to offer. Certainly Tyrol is the dream of every tourist who wants a perfect winter holiday in Austria. Thousands of miles of ski slopes for both beginners and advanced, skiing on glaciers and finding accommodation in world-renowned ski resorts or withdrawn to secluded places: an oasis of relaxation, the perfect destination for your next skiing holiday. However, Austria and Tyrol are no just about skiing. In a holiday in Kufstein, spent away from the ski slopes, you will find other surprises that Tyrol has to offer. So, if you are looking for a place to spend your vacation that has much more to offer than impeccable ski slopes, here are ten reasons to consider Tyrol for your next trip.
1. The delicious schnapps
In the heart of the Alps, you will find many distilleries, as well as hundreds of households producing schnapps, some of which you can visit. It is very much worth discovering the manufacturing process, bottling and – especially – participate in a tasting of schnapps. Visit Zum Messerschmied in Ebbs, a farm over 250 years old, lovely restored. Tasting costs only 3 euros and you should definitely try the pear schnapps. Nonetheless, you will surely find something to your liking.
2. Another delicious treat: Tyrol cheese
There is an incredible variety when it comes to cheese from the Tyrol, be it made out of cow, sheep or goat milk. Do not miss: Heumilchkäse natural cheese (in Kaiserwinkel), from Zillertal comes the wonderful Schmugglerkäse cheese, and it’s good to know that in the Alpbach mountains, cheese producers only use natural ingredients, no additives being allowed in the manufacturing process of this delicious treat.
3. Back to childhood: a sleigh ride
If you are not sure about your skiing skills, then you surely must remember how to ride a sleigh. In Kufstein, as everywhere in Tyrol, you can find numerous sloped specially designed for sledding. Our recommendation is to try that from Kala Alm. From here you can rent sleds (3 or 5 euro for the double), and after you the climb 3.1 km, you reach the beautiful Schneeberg cottage, where you can replenish forces with traditional Tyrolean dishes before making your way down the forest. The trail is accessible after dark, the slope being lit.
4. The glass factory from Riedel
Any foodie reaching Kufstein cannot miss a visit to the glass factory from Riedel. Here you can see how some of the best glasses in the world are made by hand, at a temperature of 1000 degrees. Also, do not miss Riedel’s outlet, where you can buy glasses, decanters and other glass objects at a more than reasonable manufacturer price.
5. Wellness, papering and spa
What holiday is complete without a day being pampered at a spa? It is not just a spa center, but also a hotel where you can establish your headquarters during holidays.
