If you haven’t seen the last episode of How I Met Your Mother, then we urge you to do it, because it was Legen… wait for it… dary! There are so many things we love about How I Met Your Mother and we will definitely miss the show, but the final episode has elicited many reactions from the fans, mostly of anger and deception. We thought of giving our two cents about the How I Met Your Mother ending surprises and how the show ended, just because we loved the show so much and we feel the need for some closure. To be honest, we liked how the show ended and we’re going to say one big SPOILER ALERT before we begin, so here goes!
10. That’s It, That’s the End!
Yes, we know it’s no surprise, but after the episode ended, the realization hit us. There will no longer be any new How I Met Your Mother episodes! That’s it, folks, that was the end and we’re going to have to rely on reruns if we want to get some that lovely How I Met Your Mother humor.
9. Marshal Becomes a Judge
Thank God that Marshal finally becomes a judge! After he refused the offer so that he and Lily could go to Italy for a year, we feared he would never be given another change at being a judge. But of course, he was given another chance, only good things happen to Marshmallow and Lily pad!
8. Barney Gives Up His Womanizing Ways
Barney gives up his womanizing ways because of number 4. After he becomes a father, he simply can’t look at young women the same way. Some believe the character was mistreated and that he should have just find someone to settle down with, but that’s not Barney and it never will be.
7. Ted’s Entire Story wasn’t at All about How He Met the Kid’s Mother
This is the funniest thing of the entire final episode: it turns out that Ted told the story of how he met the kid’s mother, not so that the kids know about that moment, but so that he would ask permission to (read number 2)… date Robin. How does that make you feel?
6. They Don’t Hang Out at MacLaren’s so Much
No big surprise there, we know, but now that we’ve seen them all grown up, makes us already miss the gang sitting and drinking at MacLaren’s. They’re all busy with jobs and kids and while they did promise to be there for the big moments, the old gang seems to have disappeared for ever, even before the last episode finished airing.
5. Robin Doesn’t Hang Out With the Gang Anymore
The fact that Robin doesn’t hang out with the gang anymore is one of the biggest How I Met Your Mother ending surprises. But if you think about it, it makes sense: she was the last one to join the gang and the first one to leave. How could she stay so close with her ex-boyfriend and his new wife and her ex-husband?
4. Barney Becomes a Father
The moment Barney learns that he will become a father, the whole world could almost be heard whispering: it was bound to happen! After years of sleeping around with women, something like this was just bound to happen. While at first Barney isn’t at all touched by the news, the moment he holds his baby daughter in his arms, he completely falls in love with her and changes his mind about everything. He promises her the moon, just like any great man would.
3. Robin and Barney Get a Divorce
We were genuinely saddened by the fact that Robin and Barney got a divorce three years into their marriage. She was always travelling the globe and things just didn’t work out for them. They were probably the coolest couple to ever hit the screens, so we raise the glass to Robin and Barney!
2. Ted Hooks Up With Robin in the End
For us, this was the biggest surprise of the entire show. We had hoped to see Ted and Tracy live happily ever after, but it seems that six years after Ted’s wife dies after a battle with an undisclosed illness, Ted wants to pursue and date Robin… all over again. We thought it was established that Ted and Robin were never going to work out, but it seems that the heart wants what it wants and some things are just meant to be.
1. The Mother Dies
This was widely speculated upon in the last few weeks and if you’ve been a die-hard fan, you might have guessed this was going to happen. Yes, folks, nine seasons of How I Met Your Mother and the mother is dead. Tracy, we finally learn the mother’s name in the last episode, dies 10 (or so) years after meeting Ted, from an unknown illness. We think we deserved to know at least the cause of her death, not that it mattered very much.
