Ask anyone what their opinion on media is and they will probably express a decent amount of gratitude towards it for providing the information required to stay connected to the world. Ask anyone how trustworthy they consider the media to be, and they will express a certain amount of reluctance, if not shut down the question completely. You know what they say, “Don’t trust everything that you read.” This is either because some people choose to leave out vital information, in order to draw attention in, or because some simply don’t have access to enough information to piece together a story that’s one hundred percent accurate. No matter which one we’re talking about, there will undoubtedly be some information missing from a story that’s presented to us. Some of the omitted details can be funny or extremely important, but regardless, we chose the best scenarios and compiled them into a list of 5 News Stories With Untold Sides.
1. Miss Universe
Unless you’ve been living in a secluded cave with no access to ways of communication for the last month, you probably know about the scandal of proportions that had the hugely popular beauty contest Miss Universe smack in the middle of it. Steve Harvey, who was presenting the 2016 edition of the show, shocked everyone when he accidentally proclaimed Miss Colombia as the winner. She got to enjoy a solid two minutes of fame and glory, before the crown was literally snatched off her head and handed to the rightful winner, Miss Philippines. What you may not know is that it was expected for Miss Colombia to lose, making the announcement all the more surprising. This is because there have been testimonies that she had a true diva complex, throwing temper tantrums in the backstage whenever the cameras weren’t on her.
2. Stade de France
The world was shaken by a devastating terrorist attack at the end of 2015, which left hundreds of dead people in Paris. However, the toll could have been even higher, since one of the targets was Stade de France, which at the time was filled with thousands of people who were attending a match of soccer, including the president, Francois Hollande. The media then exploded with a report that centered on Zouheir, a Muslim security guard who became a hero after he’d allegedly stopped a ticket holder wrapped in an explosive vest from entering the stadium. This stance resulted in the explosion unleashing outside, drastically diminishing the damage it could have otherwise left in its wake. Subsequently, Zouheir stated that what he declared was actually a compilation of stories he’d heard from other colleagues, and that the real hero behind the salvation of Stade de France remains unknown to the eye of the public.
3. Columbine Massacre
A while ago, two students named Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold committed genocide by shooting down a total of thirteen people, before taking their own lives. The official story contours a backstory to the tragedy, by claiming the two shooters were “bullied loners” who snapped under the pressure and went on a spur-of-the-moment rampage. What really happened had nothing to do with that. The two led excellent lives, especially socially, and Klebold even afforded to rent a limo for prom night, to which he was headed with a numerous group of friends. Moreover, there have been strong signs hinting at the massacre, proving that the shooting was premeditated. They were apparently researching ways to blow up the school and one of them even wrote an essay that aimed to explain how a man could enjoy himself during a mass shooting. One of their teachers caught up to the signs and expressed her concerns to the authorities, which harshly ignored them by labeling them as a “phase.”
4. Paris Attacks
The things left out of the news reports on the tragic events of November 2015 don’t stop at Zouheir. Many headlines and articles went on to describe how the attackers were calm and focused and how they were acting out with precision and a plan set in stone. What was vastly omitted, though, were the testimonies of the survivors who took a glimpse of the terrorists. According to them, the attackers seemed “zombie like” and they appeared as if their thoughts were somewhere else. These declarations are sustained by theorists from the International Institute of Counter-Terrorism, who believe that the attackers had taken a drug known as captagon before raining bullets and taking innocent lives. The drug is mass consumed by those who partake in the Syrian and Middle East conflict, because it’s known to help the one who takes it stay levelheaded and calm. Same theorists strongly support the claim that captagon may be the source of the remorseless barbarity shown by terrorists.
5. Donald Trump Ban
US presidency candidate Donald Trump has made quite a lot of controversial statements during his campaign, and his initiative to close the US borders to immigrants might just be the cherry on top of the cake. As a response, some people in the UK have started a petition that aims to ban Donald Trump from ever setting foot on British ground again. The petition received a lot of attention, both from citizens and the media, which constantly brings updates on the current state of the number of signatures – over half of million, to be exact. However, what the news doesn’t mention, is another petition which supports Trump’s initiative, and has gathered almost just as many signatures, except they’re for closing the borders of the UK to immigrants.
There is certainly a sense of irony in this article, isn’t it? It is a form of media, after all. But I doubt there are people who are still unaware of the often harmful and malevolent omission of information from the news we are supposed to trust. With examples like these 5 News Stories With Untold Sides, is there really a surprise that there are so many people out there who are gravely badly informed? It’s definitely a growing issue in all of our societies, and unfortunately there’s no telling if we’ll live to see an end to it.
